About

First Voice: An ELT Undergraduate Review publishes academic writing by undergraduate students in the Division of English Language Education at Gazi University. The papers here were written by first-year students in the ELT programme.

Why First Voice?

First-year students write a great deal, and some of that writing deserves to be read more widely. First Voice exists to extend that process one step further, so that writing produced in a first-year course can reach readers beyond the classroom.

The aim is for students to experience writing as something with an audience rather than a grade. Writing for readers may change how students approach argument, evidence, and revision. It may also strengthen a sense of themselves as members of a professional field, at a point in the programme where that identity is only beginning to form.

So, the papers come from...

The papers begin as coursework in Writing Skills I, a first-year course in the ELT programme. Students develop their work across the semester, revising in response to peer feedback and instructor comments.

What appears here is the revised version of that work. It reflects what first-year writers can do when given time, feedback, and a reason to revise.

But, how are they selected?

First Voice is not a peer-reviewed journal and does not issue open calls for submissions. Papers are selected by the editor from completed coursework, with attention to the clarity of the argument, the use of sources, and the development of the work across drafts.

Students are asked for their consent before publication and are credited by name.
